LEGO reveals first prototype LEGO brick made from recycled plastic
On Wednesday 23rd June, 2021, LEGO, the mainstream toy brand unveiled a prototype LEGO brick made from recycled plastic, "the latest step in its journey to make LEGO products from sustainable materials." as said on their site.
LEGO have stated that bricks from sustainable materials may be a possibility by 2030, however, according
to The Guardian, activists welcome move but warn recycling should not be default solution to the plastics crisis. LEGO has said they hope to introduce their recycled plastic bottle bricks into LEGO sets within the next 2 years.
Tim Brooks, vice-president for environmental responsibility at Lego Group, said the biggest challenge was “rethinking and innovating new materials that are as durable, strong and high quality as our existing bricks – and fit with Lego elements made over the past 60 years”.
